With 12 years experience facilitating corporate security programmes, we feel qualified to draw two conclusions about the role that staff play in corporate security.

  1. Alert, well trained staff are one of the most effective security 'systems' an organisation has (they're also usually one of the most cost-effective)
  2. The effectiveness of many other security initiatives is at best limited unless staff know what is expected of them, have the skills to achieve this and are committed to doing so

One further point is that physical and operational security measures can never eliminate safety risks for staff, contractors, suppliers and other visitors.  Therefore, it is important that staff are trained how to prevent and if necessary deal with significant safety and security risks.

Almost without exception, staff training and development is a key element of the security strategy in organisations which manage security successfully.

Armed Hold-Up Safety

An armed hold-up is one of the most frightening encounters a staff member can have, and it can happen to virtually any ‘front line’ staff member in any organisation which handles cash or high value goods.  Given that it is quite literally a life and death situation, it is absolutely vital that staff are trained how to respond safely.

Training staff how to deal with a hold-up safely is also important for legislative reasons.  Since it is impractical to prevent a robbery in most organisations, there are clear obligations on any employer whose business could experience a robbery to protect its staff by training them how to respond safely during a hold-up.  Any organisation which fails to take suitable steps to train staff is risking non-compliance with health and safety legislation.

ICON Group has build up enormous experience with this subject having trained many thousands of staff since 1991.  That depth of experience is invaluable as the training risks associated with this topic are not to be ignored.

Our seminars incorporate ICON Group’s REAL? (Real Experience Accelerated Learning) system.  These seminars use live simulations.  In our opinion, and that of most trauma specialists, this is central to preparing staff for ‘the real thing’ should they be unlucky enough to be involved in a robbery.  However, all simulations are carried out in a positive environment, under extremely tightly controlled conditions and are voluntary for the learner.
