Vetting Services
Pre-Employment Vetting
The impact of just one dishonest or poorly performing employee on an organisation can be devastating. That's why recruiting the right staff is so important.
Taking the time to verify that a prospective employee is who they say they are and what they say they are is an essential part of the recruitment process. Consider for instance that 27% of our clients' preferred candidates in the transport and distribution industry have lied about their criminal record and you can see why.
Clearly, the level and type of vetting carried out is dependent on the position being filled. As an entry level service, we have developed a package of four basic checks which we believe every employer should undertake for all staff. The checks are:
- A Criminal Conviction Check (includes driving convictions)
- A Financial Credit Check
- A personal check of up to three previous employers or personal references
- Full Driver Check, includes driver licence status confirmation and 5 year history of driving demerits/suspensions (highly recommended for staff that may drive company vehicles)
While we recommend more extensive checks for senior managers, we consider that these checks alone are sufficient for front line employees and lower level supervisors.
Objectives of Service
Our front line employee vetting service has the following objectives:
- To verify that the person does not have a relevant criminal record or if they do that it is correctly stated on their employment application form
- To assess the person's financial stability
- To verify the person's stated work history
- Is the record as stated, or has the applicant fabricated their work history to cover up for a dismissal or unsatisfactory performance?
- To verify the person's position and responsibilities in previous jobs
- To assess the person's previous work performance
- How did they perform?
- What was their general work attitude and ethic?
- To verify if the employee was viewed as an asset or a liability to the previous employer
Pre-employment vetting is a low-cost security measure that has proven its value to our clients many times over.
Tenancy Screening and Checks
We can detect tenants with a poor rental history to avoid granting leases to tenants with a poor record of payment, or who have been subject to legal action.
For many New Zealanders, owning investment properties has been an attractive alternative to the share market or more speculative investment opportunities.
Whilst property rental is relatively low risk, the consequences of a bad tenant who damages the property or defaults on their rental can be considerable.
There are professional ‘bad’ tenants who are very good at targeting private landlords. They avoid renting any property through Real Estate Agents or Property Managers, knowing that the information obtained while processing their application may unearth adverse tenancy and/or financial history. This will ring alarm bells for any landlord!
It is not uncommon for a landlord whose tenants have left owing weeks of back-rent to find overdue bills in the tenants name flooding in to the mailbox for weeks after their departure. The landlord may have inadvertently added themselves to a growing list of creditors.
ICON Group’s recently launched Tenancy Check service is unique to the New Zealand market. Although we can’t promise you the ‘perfect tenant’, we can do some sensible, basic but thorough checks to expose adverse credit or tenancy history BEFORE you make that final decision.

How does it work?
- You are still in control of advertising your property and interviewing your preferred applicants. Once you have got to that point, simply fax the completed application form to us, along with a readable copy of the applicant’s identification (drivers licence or passport). Provided the application form is in order, you will begin to see results within half a day of us receiving it. We will contact you with any concerns throughout the process.
- For a fee well below the average of one week’s rental on a residential property, ICON Group will conduct reference interviews, a financial history check, employment verification if requested, numerous database searches (including Ministry of Justice Tenancy Tribunal Orders). A criminal history check is also advised if time allows (this usually takes 10- 15 working days to process).
- You will be provided with an application form for the prospective tenant to complete, which includes authorization to conduct the checks. If you don’t already have a Tenancy Agreement, this can also be supplied at your request. All forms will be emailed or posted to you, ready for immediate use.
- All checks are fully compliant with New Zealand legislative requirements and will help provide you with peace of mind before making the final tenant choice.
